In today’s world of law enforcement training technology, the staff at AZ POST is committed to staying on the absolute leading edge of technology with a newly purchased mobile driver training simulator. Built by L3 Communications, 2 virtual reality simulators are operated out of a fully self-contained 42’ trailer, which is transported around the state of Arizona to various Law Enforcement Agencies. With this mobile unit, it will allow for those agencies to get the desired training needed to stay in compliance with AZ POST training requirements. This mobile driver training simulator is operated by Officer Matt Griffis, whom is assigned to AZ POST from the City of Tucson Police Department.
Simulation is a procedure, which tries to emulate a complicated event. A simulator is a device used for simulation. The simulator is not meant to be a replacement for the actual driving track. It is a tool that allows trainers and administrators to study a driver’s actions under extreme situations and conditions. With simulation, many types of situations may be created to allow the student to apply his or her knowledge in a very real environment which allows instructors to evaluate a driver’s strengths and weaknesses but not place the individual in any danger. Simulator training can be done safely and economically without consuming a liter of fuel, can save wear and tear on training vehicles and can provide statistics on individual drivers, individual agencies as well as making remedial training recommendations.
The PatrolSim III+™ Driver Training Simulator offers law enforcement agencies a high fidelity, interactive training experience in real time that saves lives and department budgets. The three channel immersive driving environment combines the look and feel of a real squad car with the most advanced technology on the market. Officers can select from a variety of visual environments, training scenarios and special effects including high-speed chases and extreme weather conditions. PatrolSim III+™ also can network with multiple simulators to create a multi-officer scenario, complete with dispatcher.
AST's EVOC-101 is a self contained, simulator-run, Emergency Vehicle Operations training program developed to improve and measure a driver's tactical decision making skills. AST's program requires students to prioritize their vehicle handling and emergency task activities while actually experiencing critical segments of emergency response and pursuit operations. It is designed to run on all PatrolSim TM series simulators.
EVOC-101 provides short, repetitive lessons starting with basic skills; and as each scenario advances, the lesson incorporates more complexity an task loading. Each progressive scenario requires a corresponding level of discipline to manage line of sight, use of emergency equipment, and to demonstrate analytical decision making while maintaining compliance with their agency's SOPs. A computer-based driver measurement system analyzes driver performance from a list of trainer selected criteria and applies a weighted-point scoring system to assess a driver's performance.
